Friendship Regained

I’d known you well,
so well,
            but we’d
drifted; floating, spinning,
unfettered.
            A chance encounter,
friendship regained.
      Stumbling from the old
college bar, together.
We laughed a bit too
heartily,
your phone to your ear,
telling her that you loved her.
I didn’t see
                        the taxi — you’d
stepped into the road —
a quiet thump — nothing to hear
though all around there was
screaming.
I know you again;
your girlfriend seems nice.
            My first catholic service.
No-longer drifting apart,
I keep you in my thoughts
                        always.
